Top Ten WFH Tips from our CIO

By Fortra's Digital Defense

Digital Defense CIO, Tom DeSot shares ten basic cybersecurity tips to observe while working from home. Pass along this list with your employees who are working remotely to help protect your information, your network, and your company assets.

  • Always lock your computer when you are away from it.
  • Remember that your work- issued computer is not intended for use by others, that includes your spouse or children.
  • Always keep your firewall on.
  • Always monitor your A/V products to look for alerts of issues that have happened.
  • Shred any work-related materials that you have printed and no longer need.
  • Turn your computer off when not in use at the end of the day (For many systems, this engages your hard drive encryption and protects the data stored on your drive if the unit is stolen from your home).
  • If you are traveling with your computer, always place the computer in a hidden spot in your vehicle BEFORE you get to where you are going.
  • Ensure that you are using Wi-Fi Protected Access 2 (WPA2) that provides stronger data protection on your wireless network.
  • Do not share the password to your computer with anyone, including those in your home.
  • Unplug home automation and smart devices that might be listening in, including Amazon Echo, Google Home, and other smart home equipment.
